The Gulf of Kotor has officially joined the Association of 28 most beautiful bays in the world, since 1997. The medieval town of Kotor sits at the furthest recess of the Boka Bay, at the foot of the majestic Lovcen.

For most, Kotor is the most beautiful place in Montenegro.  It was in fact added to the UNESCO list of world cultural heritages after the devastating earthquake in 1979.

The old town remains encircled in walls and has three main gates.  The walls rise at the back to the top of the rocky hillside, and can be climbed by a winding path and lots of rock steps.  On the way you will find interesting spots, and a small church.  The breathtaking views from the fortress high above the bay make the climb worthwhile!  Kotor's walls are 4.5km, twice the length of Dubrovnik's walls and rise 260 meters above the city.

Kotor old town (Stari Grad) is a fantastic place to explore in itself.  With narrow cobbled street, elegant piazzas, stylish bars and boutiques, you could stroll around for hours and keep discovering.  The main gate leads to the main square, known as "Piazza of the arms" (Trg oruzija).  This square is a great spot to chill out, and watch the world go by!

The cathedral of St. Tryphon in Kotor is one of the oldest and most beautiful examples of Roman architecture along the Adriatic Sea. It contains a treasury of artifacts.  Kotor also houses the Naval museum, famous for its collections of various types of vessels, paintings, weapons, folk costumes and pottery, representing the magnificence and glory of the seafaring tradition and life in this area.

Kotor town is a wonderful base for your holiday, from which you can explore the rest of the Montenegro coast.  Take a local bus, or hire a car.  Sandy beaches are within a 15 minute drive, and you can sunbathe and swim within 5 minutes walk of Kotor old town.  It caters for all - it has a good selection of quiet and lively bars, restaurants, and one disco!
